Fiber Bed Filtration – Not all Filters are designed the Same

Optimal filtration is imperative during times of heavy manufacturing and taxing demands on manufacturing plants. It has never been more important to maintain a line of quality filtration to reduce opacity and emissions. Fiber Bed Filters mist collectors are used to trap, collect, and remove liquids and soluble particulate suspended in a gas stream. Fiber bed filters, also known as Candle Filters, Coalescing Filters, or Fiber Mist Collection Systems effectively remove up to 99.9% percent of sub-micron particulates. They are also used to collect insoluble solids. Fiber Bed filters are known to work well in applications such as asphalt, metalworking or oil mist, food processing, chemical processing, acid mist control, and many other industries.

Fiber bed filters

Fiber Bed Filters are designed to provide the final user with many years of optimal performance and minimal operation or maintenance requirements. Typically, these filters are handcrafted and constructed in cylindrical form, filters can range in size from 1 ft to massive in size approaching 20 ft.

The body of the Candle Filter is made of inner and outer cages composed of Carbon Steel, Alloy materials, FRP, and Polypropylene. Depending on your performance indicators, a specific composition of layers will be selected. The filter unit rest on or are suspended from a tube sheet inside a closed tank. The design will aim to optimize efficiency and pressure drop.

Integral prefilters can be provided to improve performance and life of the Candle Filters in the system. Various replacement options are available to facilitate replacement of the prefilter.

Quality Fiber Bed Filters should provide you with low initial pressure drop that results in energy savings. Filters should yield long filter life which means low replacement cost and low maintenance cost. Each filter should be tested in-house to ensure field performance.

Choosing a manufacturer

You should choose a supplier that can manufacturer Fiber Bed Filters to replace your current filters which will provide improved performance and/or filter life. The sales and technical staff should have extensive experience with existing installations allowing them to provide the exact solution you need.

Mechanisms of filtration

When particles larger than 3 microns are prevented from flowing around the fibers they will then strike and collide with the fiber, known as Inertial Impaction.

Generally, particles between 1.0 and 3.0 microns move with less momentum and follow the air stream until they come in proximity and are collected by the fibers and thereby removing them from the air stream, knows as interception.

As extremely fine particles also known as sub-micron particles that contain little mass collide with gas molecules, they will move in a side-to-side motion or random motion also known as Brownian movement This greatly increases the probability of collision with a fiber on the filter.
